On Saturday morning, Skye Mockabee, a black transgender woman, was found dead in a parking lot in Cleveland.
According to a police report, 26-year-old Skye Mockabee, was found lying face down next to a tow truck, bleeding from the mouth when she was discovered.
“Our hearts, minds and condolences are with Skye’s family, friends, and community in this time of tragedy,” said Aaron Eckhardt, training and technical assistance director of the Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization (BRAVO), in a press release. “All of us at BRAVO are saddened and outraged as our communities continue to be repeatedly targeted and we remain steadfast in providing services to the LGBTQI communities of Ohio.”
“We must continue to come together as a broad community of support to say hate has no home in Ohio, hate has no home anywhere.”
According to the New York City Anti-Violence Project, this is the third transgender woman killed in the month of July and the sixteenth gender nonconforming person killed this year.
Cleveland.com reports Mockabee’s death comes one month after the city passed a law allowing transgender people to use whichever restroom, shower or locker room fits with their gender identity.
