TSD e•Edition — In this issue: Economic Development Forum asks: ‘Are You Future Ready?’

The Tri-State Defender is proud to be a media partner with the Mid-South Minority Business Continuum (MMBC) and the organzation’s upcoming Economic Development Forum.

Recently, I published part of an interview I had with Jozelle Booker, the CEO of the MMBC. It quickly became clear to me that whatever I thought the organization did, I was operating off of bad information. Jozelle was patient in explaining the many levels on which MMBC helps small businesses grow and thrive. In this e•Edition, there’s an expanded version of our conversation that covers much more ground business-wise.

There’s a lot of energy and excitement in the Bluff City these days about economic empowerment and generational wealth. If you’ve been having those conversations you definitely need to check the story — and the EDF — out.

In this week’s e•Edition:

MMBC’s Economic Development Forum: The Mid-South Minority Business Council hosts its annual forum from September 10-12, focusing on preparing the community for a rapidly evolving economic landscape with keynotes and panels on leadership, strategic partnerships, and AI’s impact on business.

Methodist Le Bonheur’s Healthier 901 Fest: Memphis Mayor Paul Young teams up with former mayors to promote the Healthier 901 initiative, aiming to help the Mid-South shed one million pounds. The event at Shelby Farms on August 31 features cooking demos, health screenings, and more.

Shelby County Commission’s Mental Health Center: The commission approves a $1.73 million design contract for a new mental health center aimed at diverting minor offenders from jail to treatment, marking a significant step in addressing mental health needs in the community.

Larry Dodson’s Bar-Kays at ‘Fool In Love Fest’: Memphis music legend Larry Dodson and his band, the Bar-Kays, will perform at the “Fool In Love Fest” in Los Angeles, alongside icons like Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. Dodson reflects on his musical journey and the significance of this event.

WLOK’s 49th Stone Soul Picnic: The iconic gospel music event returns with performances by The Canton Spirituals and other renowned gospel artists at The Coronet, promising a day of uplifting music and community celebration.
