The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis has announced the appointment of Gwendolyn Woods as its new Chief Executive Officer. Woods steps into the role following her tenure as interim CEO through September, succeeding Metise Moore Sr.
Woods, a Memphis native with deep roots in the community, brings extensive experience to the position. Since 2021, she has served as the organizationโs Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer. Her dedication to youth development and her leadership throughout her career made her a standout candidate during the organizationโs comprehensive search process.
โWe are thrilled to appoint Gwendolyn Woods to the role of CEO,โ said Michael Garriga, chair of the Boys and Girls Clubsโ central board. โAfter a thorough search and invaluable feedback from our team and board, it was clear that Gwendolyn is the right leader for this organization. Her passion for working with children and her commitment to their success align perfectly with our mission.โ
Woodsโs journey to this leadership role is rooted in her commitment to serving young people. Raised by a single mother after the loss of her father at the age of four, she has been a strong advocate for youth programs throughout her career. Her leadership roles include serving as a center director at Girls Inc., a community center assistant director for the City of Memphis, and a case manager and investigator for the Tennessee Department of Childrenโs Services.
Joining the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis in 2017, Woods initially worked as director and training liaison at the Ira Samelson Jr. Boys and Girls Club before advancing to oversee operations. As interim CEO, she demonstrated a clear vision and an ability to connect with the organizationโs mission of enabling young people to reach their full potential.
โI feel like my entire career has prepared me for this role,โ Woods said. โIโm excited about the team we have and the work we do with kids who need us most to become their best selves.โ
Keith Blanchard, the organizationโs CEO from 2014 to 2023, assisted as a senior advisor throughout the leadership transition. Blanchard expressed his confidence in Woods, who will continue to shape the future of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis.
With 19 clubs, a technical training center, and a summer residence camp serving more than 7,800 members annually, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis provides a vital resource for the community. Under Woodsโs leadership, the organization is poised to build on its mission of providing safe spaces, mentorship, and opportunities for young people across Memphis.
