The Tri-State Defender (TSD) is one of the longest, continuously published
newspapers in the South that caters to the news and information needs of
the African American community. In January 2024, TSD transitioned to a
digital format to keep readers informed quickly as news hits that affects the
community. First published November 1, 1951, the weekly newspaper has
been an anchor element in the multi-platform delivery of news and
information. TSDMemphis.com is now the primary source for news along
with the TSD Daily Digital and social media platforms.

Part-Time Content Editor

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and adaptable Part-Time Content Editor to join our editorial team. This role is responsible for reviewing, editing and optimizing written content for clarity, accuracy, tone and style. The ideal candidate has a strong grasp of grammar, journalistic standards and digital publishing practices.

Responsibilities

  • Edit and proofread articles for grammar, punctuation, spelling and style consistency
  • Ensure content aligns with editorial guidelines and brand voice
  • Fact-check information and verify sources as needed
  • Collaborate with writers, reporters and other editors to improve content quality
  • Optimize headlines, subheadings and body text for SEO and readability
  • Review content for legal and ethical compliance
  • Manage multiple assignments and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Assist in content planning and editorial calendar management (as needed)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related
  • field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of editing experience, preferably in a newsroom or digital media environment
  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Familiarity with AP Style or similar editorial standards
  • Basic understanding of SEO best practices
  • Experience with content management systems (e.g., WordPress)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively

Preferred Skills

  • Experience editing for digital-first publications
  • Knowledge of analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics)
  • Ability to adapt tone and style across different content types

Location

This is a hybrid position, requiring successful candidates to work from the
office at least three days a week at the office.

Junior Multimedia Journalist

Position Overview

We are seeking a passionate and innovative Junior Multimedia Journalist to
join our dynamic editorial team at The Tri-State Defender. In this role, you
will contribute to the production of compelling multimedia content across
various platforms, helping to tell impactful stories that resonate with our
audience.

Responsibilities

  • Research, write and edit articles that reflect the voice and standards of The Tri-State Defender.
  • Produce engaging multimedia content, including video, audio and graphics, to enhance storytelling
  • Collaborate with senior journalists, contributors and editors to develop story ideas and ensure accurate reporting
  • Utilize social media platforms to promote content and engage with the audience
  • Participate in editorial meetings and contribute to the development of coverage plans
  • Assist in the management of content across digital platforms, ensuring timely updates and accuracy

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or related field
  • Strong writing and editing skills with a keen eye for detail
  • Familiarity with multimedia production tools and techniques
  • Understanding of digital media trends and audience engagement strategies

Preferred:

  • Experience in multimedia journalism through internships or freelance work
  • Proficiency in video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro)
  • Knowledge of SEO best practices and social media strategies
  • Experience writing following Associated Press Stylebook

Technical Skills and Relevant Technologies

  • Proficient in content management systems (CMS) and digital publishing tools
  • Basic skills in graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Canva)
  • Familiarity with analytics tools to measure content performance
