Is Tennessee’s civic health at risk? Let’s talk about it!

The pitch to Shelby County is for an “honest, open and civil conversation with other members of your community about the state of civic participation in Tennessee.”

The invitation is being extended by ThinkTennessee, with the gathering set for Thursday (Sept. 13) from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Memphis Urban League at 413 North Cleveland St.

Dubbed A Community Conversation about Civic Health in Tennessee, the 90-minute public event is anchored in the premise that civic engagement is a vital part of the overall health of the state. Organizers point to “recent trends” that they say suggest “our state may be at risk.”

For example, in the last two statewide elections, Tennessee ranked at the bottom for both turnout (50th in 2014 and 49th in 2016) and registration (40th in 2014 and 45th in 2016).

The conversation will be structured to address why aren’t Tennesseans voting.

During the facilitated conversation, participants will review short materials and discuss what they think are the reasons behind the low voter participation across the state and how “we as a community can address them together.”

The event is part of The Conversation Project, a program of Humanities Tennessee. Developed in partnership with the Tennessee Press Association, the event is part of a series of six community conversations scheduled this fall.
