LEGACY: Services set for O.C. Pleasant Jr.

Services for long-serving former Shelby County Election Commission Chairman O. C. Pleasant Jr. have been set for Dec. 21-22.

Pleasant, also widely known for his work as part of the Memphis Branch NAACP executive committee, passed away last Sunday. He was 76.

On Dec. 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., a wake will be held for Mr. Pleasant at Serenity Funeral Home at 1638 Sycamore View Road. At 10 a.m. the next day, visitation will be held at St. John Catholic Church at 2742 Lamar.

The home-going service follows at 11 a.m., with internment at Calvary Cemetery at 1663 Elvis Presley Blvd. The repass will be at Serenity Funeral Home.

For many, Ocie C. “O.C.” Pleasant Jr. was the quintessential chairman of the Election Commission. He served from 1979 to 2009 and was chairman of that election-administering body for 24 of those 30 years.

He was married to Barbara King and the father of Darryl and the late Chandra.
