Challenged by a foot injury, Memphis Grizzlies shooting guard Dillon Brooks rolled into Staxtacular 2019 determined to fill his role as host.

Brooks, who is out for the season following surgery to repair a ruptured ligament in his right big tow, had plenty of support, including teammates such as Jaren Jackson Jr. and Javon Carter.

The Soulsville Foundation’s 15th annual Staxtacular was presented by SunTrust at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music at 926 E. McLemore Ave. last Friday (Feb. 8). As has become the norm, the yearly fundraiser for Stax Music Academy was a GRIT, GRIND, AND GET FUNKY” event.

This year, the entertainment began with a performance by the internationally renowned Stax Music Academy. Then came a funk fest by Stax icons and international music stars The Bar-Kays, making their Staxtacular debut.

Guests eased among the cuisine stations and cocktail bars throughout the museum. There was an on-site and an online auction, dancing and plenty of live music.

For the record, The Bar-Kays and new lead singer Chris J showed out.

Staxtacular has raised more than $1.2 million to date for the Stax Music Academy, a program of the Soulsville Foundation that also operates the Stax Museum of American Soul Music and The Soulsville Charter School.
