Live! Memphis Breast Cancer Summit to guide women from screening to survivorship

Kimmi Scott, a breast cancer survivor and star of “Love & Marriage Huntsville” will keynote the 2023 Live! Memphis Breast Cancer Summit at the Guest House at Graceland on Saturday (May 13).

Scott’s address will highlight the annual event’s ninth year. It is set for 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The theme is “Waiting to Exhale: From Screening to Survivorship.”

Live! Memphis was created by the Memphis Breast Cancer Consortium (MBCC), whose mission is to bring together organizations and individuals in Memphis and Shelby County to “educate, empower, and encourage women in the areas of breast cancer screening, treatment, and survivorship.”

MBCC is located in the Center for Transforming Communities at 258 N. Merton St. The program director is Dr. Fedoria Rugless, who is spearheading 2023 Live! Memphis.

“I am excited about the great advancements that have been made in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, and I want everyone to have access to this information,” said Dr. Rugless.

“We have provided a space for that for the past nine years. Live! Memphis is an informative, upbeat, and inspiring event where we focus on giving the public, patients, their families, and caregivers hope and tools for survival.”

Breast Cancer is the most common type of cancer among women today. However, with strides in treatment, including improved methods of early detection and the evaluation of risk factors, it is no longer the one that claims the most lives.

African-American women are still diagnosed at a higher rate and stage than Caucasian women. All women are encouraged to get mammograms to assist with early detection, which is vital for increased survival. Mobile mammography units will be on-site for the summit.

Live! Memphis will feature a variety of activities and educational opportunities. Experts from Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare, Baptist Cancer Center, Regional One, and West Cancer Center will address topics that include the latest innovations in breast cancer treatment, genetics testing, clinical research, prevention, early detection and healthy living.

Although the summit is free, registration is required at www.mbcc.live. Or, call 901-300-6459. Attendees will receive swag bags and have several opportunities to win prizes. The Guest House at Graceland is located at 3600 Elvis Presley Blvd.

The 2023 Live! Memphis sponsors are the Patient Advocate Foundation, Baptist Memorial Healthcare, West Cancer Foundation, Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare, American Cancer Society, and The University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
