The Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering (MASE) made history Friday afternoon, capturing its first Class 1A state championship with a dramatic 36-34 win over South Pittsburg at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga.

Behind the stellar play of quarterback Brody Whittaker and running back Chris Watson, the Phoenix overcame a late-game surge by the Pirates to secure the title in their inaugural appearance on the championship stage.

A Back-and-Forth Battle

South Pittsburg struck first with a 59-yard touchdown run by Dayon Cooper, setting the stage for a high-scoring affair. MASE answered quickly with a 15-yard rushing touchdown by Deuante Jones, followed by an 18-yard run from Watson, who also converted a crucial two-point attempt.

Despite the Phoenixโ€™s early control, Cooper tied the game at halftime with a 38-yard score, leaving both teams locked at 14-14 heading into the break.

Second Half Heroics

The third quarter saw MASE regain its momentum, as Whittaker connected with wide receiver Kadience Nelson for a 14-yard touchdown to put the Phoenix ahead. Watson continued to shine, adding two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a pivotal 14-yard scamper that ultimately sealed the victory.

South Pittsburgโ€™s offense, led by Cooper, refused to back down, tallying two late-game touchdowns and pulling within two points. However, MASEโ€™s defense held firm in the final minutes, forcing a critical stop to deny the Pirates any chance of a comeback.

By the Numbers

  • MASE Rushing Attack: 235 yards, led by Chris Watson with 76 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Passing Game: Whittaker went 12-for-18 for 179 yards and one touchdown.
  • Defensive Standouts: The Phoenix forced two key turnovers, including a second-half fumble that swung the momentum.

Capping Off a Historic Season

For head coach Cedric Miller, the victory was the culmination of a 27-year coaching career and a testament to the resilience and determination of his players.

The Phoenixโ€™s historic win adds another chapter to Memphis high school football lore, as MASE brings home the cityโ€™s latest state championship.

Oakland Defeats Houston to Claim Class 6A Title
Oakland 42, Houston 20

The Houston Mustangsโ€™ hopes for a second consecutive Class 6A state championship fell short as the Oakland Patriots delivered a commanding 42-20 victory in the BlueCross Bowl Championship at Finley Stadium.

Houston quarterback Chandler Day connected on three touchdown passes, including two to Derrick Miller, but the Mustangs struggled to establish the run, totaling just 23 rushing yards on the night.

Oakland overcame an early 7-0 deficit with six rushing touchdowns, including three from Morris, who finished with 145 rushing yards on 16 carries. Tutt added 84 yards and a touchdown, while Tamari Hill scored twice on the ground.

Oaklandโ€™s dominant ground game, led by Daune Morris and Craig Tutt, proved too much for Houstonโ€™s defense to handle.

The Melrose Golden Wildcatsโ€™ season came to a bittersweet end in a 45-14 loss to Macon County in the Class 4A championship. Despite an early touchdown run by senior running back Jarmarion Morrow, Melrose couldnโ€™t keep pace with Macon Countyโ€™s high-powered offense, led by Zach Bordersโ€™ 249 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Melrose, making its first championship appearance since 2005, finished the season with a 10-4 record.
