The 2018 version of The New Tri-State Defender’s Health & Wellness special insert took on added significance for the production team after the death last October of the newspaper’s late publisher Bernal E. Smith II.
To me, it seemed like ignoring the elephant in the room to design and create such a section and to not speak to the health emergency that ended Mr. Smith’s life journey at age 45.
The question was this: How to do it in line with bringing about awareness while also being sensitive to family and friends? The key was getting the person who knew him best to share her story.
Independently, Towanda Peete-Smith had started to share that story in public spaces as she and her family accepted community honors and accolades bestowed on their beloved husband and father. The approach to her yielded the story of a burgeoning health-based partnership that is the anchor of this year’s section.
Also in the special insert:
- ABCs of Safe Sleep for Babies
- Memphis Health Center still serving the community
- Be A Blessing: Become an Organ Donor
- The Salt Hiding In Your Food
All of the Health & Wellness content is being delivered with this biblical verse in mind:
“Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” – Proverbs
