Second Annual M.I.A. Foundation Gala Set for October 19 in Memphis

The M.I.A. Foundation is gearing up for its Second Annual Gala, to be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the TTA Event Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

The event, themed “Growing Through Grief,” will bring together families and communities impacted by the loss of loved ones to gun violence, domestic violence, and suicide.

Kristal Coleman, Founder of M.I.A.Foundation

Founded in 2022 by Kristal Coleman after the tragic death of her daughter Tamia at age 19, the M.I.A. Foundation—short for Mission in Agape (Unconditional Love)—is dedicated to supporting parents and families who have lost children under devastating circumstances. The foundation provides various resources, including grief counseling, financial assistance for funeral expenses, and legal aid referrals.

Keynote speaker Pastor Dianne Young will lead the evening, offering words of encouragement and healing. Pastor Young, a seasoned suicide prevention advocate and certified wellness counselor, is the Senior Pastor of Healing Center Full Gospel Church and co-founder of the National Suicide and the Black Church Conference.

The event will also feature a vibrant fashion show hosted by Global Brand and Image Consultant K. Newsom, adding a celebratory and uplifting element to the evening’s focus on remembrance and healing. Other notable speakers include:

  • Dr. Naricia Futrell, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Event Host
  • Vernetta Edelman, Representative of the Shelby County Crime Victims & Rape Center
  • Dr. Barbara J. Love, Domestic Violence Advocate and founder of The Love Foundation
  • Latrice Calvin, Suicide Prevention Advocate

Coleman reflected on the personal loss that led to the founding of the M.I.A. Foundation.

“Dealing with the death of my daughter has taken me through a range of emotional, mental, physical, and financial states,” she said. “I’ve learned the best way to navigate such a traumatic experience is a strong support system.

“I began this organization to help others who are grieving and growing to find the resources they need during one of the toughest times in their lives,” she continued.

The Gala will include tributes, a memorial service, and heartfelt discussions designed to support and empower families facing unimaginable loss. Parents who have lost a child are invited to attend at no cost, though registration is required.
