Singer nets top prize in the Memphis Youth Got Talent finale

It was “Show Time at the Cannon Center” last Thursday (July 26) as seven Memphis youth battled to win the grand prize of $1,000 in the Second Annual Youth Got Talent show.

Young and talented, the performers sang, danced and rapped. Master of Ceremony Michael Adrian Davis with 88.5 kept the audience engaged with an energetic and comical presentation throughout.

Judges included Producer Kurt Clayton, native Memphis rapper Alphonzo “Al Capone” Bailey and Director of Ballet on Wheels Chaunience Thompson.

“This was an event designed for the youth of Memphis to showcase their talents,” said Ike Griffith, Special Assistant to Mayor Jim Strickland and the Director of the Memphis Office of Youth Services.

“This was wholesome cultivated entertainment for our youth that must continue as an annual event.”

Donovan Jones, a 10th grader from Ridgeway High School, was the first place winner.  Jones sang John Legend’s “All of Me” and earned the grand prize sponsored by the Memphis Youth Coalition.

“I wasn’t prepared for this win. I went out there and gave it my best! My practicing daily paid off,” said Donovan.

Second place went to Tatanya Banks, a 9th grader at Soulsville Charter School. Her $500 prize – sponsored by Synergy Technology – was earned for her original rap, “Turning Up.”

Third place went to Kristen Fair, an 8th grader at Riverview Middle School. Her rendition of “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara brought her the prize of $250 sponsored by the Memphis Urban League.

Admission for the event was three canned goods or a jar of peanut butter. The result was 570 pounds of food collected for Memphis Food Bank.

School supplies, provided by the Memphis Office of Youth Services, were given to the students after the event.
