Soft opening yields royal feeling at Tailors’ Union/The Pocket

Tailors’ Union/The Pocket – a membership, speakeasy lounge for professionals – is open Wednesday through Saturday at 4 p.m. and patrons must be 25 or older to enter. Non-members can experience the new concept for free during the establishment’s soft opening phase. (Courtesy photos)

Housed within a historic yet modern space with fancy drinks, live music and a diverse crowd, the new lounge, tapas and cigar bar Tailors’ Union/The Pocket feels every bit of royal.

Catered to local professionals seeking a laid-back evening away from the regular Memphis scene, this intimate lounge is one of the city’s best-kept secrets, and is conveniently located in the heart of the city’s most trendy areas at 115 Union Ave.

“It is a membership, speakeasy lounge, for professionals who are looking to engage in a relaxed atmosphere with like-minded individuals,” said Dana Pegues Pointer, an owner.

The storefront resembles an upscale tailor’s shop or clothing store, but the inside tells a different story. The upstairs bar and lounge area is a brightly-lit, sleek modern space with a long bar on one side and intimate booths on the other. The basement includes a bar where cigar lovers can enjoy upscale drinks and smokes in the cigar lounge.

“Tailors’ Union is chic, modish and has a big city ambiance. It is an absolute great addition to Memphis’ downtown flair for professionals seeking alternative entertainment and a mature nightlife,” said Towanda Peete-Smith after a visit.

Offering an experience unlike any other bar or lounge in town, The Pocket is the perfect place to go after work or on the weekends with friends.

The Pocket offers small plates only, meant to supplement the drinks or provide a snack. The menu is basic with Portobello sliders, crab cakes and BBQ egg rolls, with a bourbon and Baileys brownie served as dessert.

The Pocket will offer 10 signature drinks and five classic cocktails, as well as top shelf liquor, such as bourbon and scotches.

“I really enjoyed my experience at the Tailors’ Union/The Pocket. The check-in crew was professional, friendly and enthusiastic. The music and ambiance was mesmerizing with an elegant flair,” said Tracy Starks-Jackson. “An amazingly great wind-down venue.”

Tailors’ Union/The Pocket hopes to bring a level of entertainment, hosting and experience like no other to the city.

“Memphis, we’re known for our great food, our great music, but we also want to be known as a place where people can have an exclusive environment where they can enjoy themselves,” said Pointer.

Non-members can experience this new concept for free during the establishment’s soft opening phase. However, starting Sept. 15, Tailors’ Union/The Pocket will be open to members and their guests only.

Tailors’ Union/The Pocket is open Wednesday through Saturday at 4 p.m. and patrons must be 25 or older to enter.
