The South Memphis Affordable Home Show will give potential buyers of affordable homes an experience usually reserved for buyers of high-end, custom homes: the chance to choose their lots, floorplans and interior finishes.
The home show will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 at 681 Saxon Place, in the Saxon-Shaw neighborhood, a 12-home affordable-housing development in the Soulsville neighborhood, a short walk from LeMoyne-Owen College.
The home show is being hosted by the South City Community Development Corp. in partnership with the City of Memphis, the Memphis and Shelby County Community Redevelopment Agency and the Emerging Developer Academy.
Attendees will be able to tour a completed home and meet with Saxon-Shaw developer Casey Cooper, founder and CEO of The Compass Circle and the South City CDC. The family-friendly, free event will feature food trucks, a DJ, vendors, giveaways and home-buying resources. Mortgage lenders will offer pre-qualification on site.
Saxon-Shaw homes are in the affordable housing category, with prices from $220,000-$225,000 for the three- and four-bedroom homes featuring 10-foot ceilings, manufactured hardwood and tile flooring and stand-alone tubs. The energy-efficient homes range from 1540-1650 square feet.
Cooper founded the South City CDC earlier this year to promote home ownership and business development in South Memphis. She said she decided to host the home show in support of Memphis Mayor Paul Young’s initiative to add or renovate 10,000 housing units by 2030.
“We see no reason the homes in Saxon-Shaw can’t be both affordable and custom,” she said. “We’re building on the pride in the historic Soulsville neighborhood with new homes that first-time homebuyers can make their own in unique ways.”
