Demand for substantive changes in the way law enforcement is applied in Memphis and the US, particularly as it relates to African Americans, fueled local protests for a fifth day on Sunday.
For several hours, protesters flowed through various parts of downtown Memphis, with attempts by some to shut down bridges into Arkansas. At times, demonstrators were face to face with police officers.
The rolling scenario was punctuated by competing interests, with factions of protesters at times pitted against each other.
Later in the evening and into Monday morning, a chaotic situation developed, punctuated by complaints of police heavy-handedness, objects thrown in the direction of officers, acts of looting, use of tear-gas and arrests.
