The Tri-State Defender is set to host its next TSD in the Community Forum focusing on government and policy on Wednesday, June 3, 6 – 7:30 p.m. The forum will return to where the series first began a little more than a year ago at Southbrook Town Center, located at 1254 East Shelby Drive.

Admission is free but attendees are encouraged to register here

The audience will have an opportunity to hear from and ask questions of local government and policy leaders and professionals. Panel participants include:

  • Dr. Darrick Dee Harris, president, Political Systems & Solutions
  • Representative Karen Camper, Minority Leader, Tennessee House of Representatives
  • Mike Carpenter, Principal, Carpenter Civic Strategies
  • Shante Avant, Chairwoman, Shelby County Commission

As with past TSD in the Community Forums, Lori Spicer Robertson, community leader and founder of the Wundher womenโ€™s empowerment collective, will serve as the moderator and guide the eveningโ€™s conversation.

โ€œThese forums are designed to get to the crux of whatโ€™s happening in our community,โ€ said Stephanie R. Jones, Tri-State Defender editor. โ€œIf ever we needed to be informed and understand whatโ€™s going on politically in our city and our nationโ€™s capital, the time is now.โ€

The forum is set to take place a few months before primary electionsย  in August and comes as Black votersโ€™ rights were threatened by redistricting in Tennessee and across the country.

โ€œWe want people to understand whatโ€™s happening and learn what they can do to make sure their voice is heard,โ€ said Deidre Malone, TSD vice president. โ€œOur Black votes matter and knowledge is power.โ€

The forum series began in March 2025, underscoring the African-American focused paperโ€™s commitment to bringing the community together for discourse, problem-solving and community uplift. Previous discussions have focused on women in leadership, healthcare access and trust, education, public safety and entrepreneurship in Memphis.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been so pleased with the turnout to date,โ€ said Calvin Anderson, TSD president. โ€œWe hope everyone comes out this time to learn, engage and see how their presence makes a difference in Memphis and beyond.โ€

All are welcome to attend the event Wednesday, June 3, 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Southbrook Town Center.ย
