In case you’ve missed it, the music icon’s “Piano and a Microphone 1983” is out today in multiple formats. It’s exactly what it says – Prince noodling through several songs, some of them you’re familiar with; others are being heard for the first time (well, by people who weren’t Prince bootleg collectors like me). Enter “Mary Don’t You Weep.”
Used in the closing credits of Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman”, it’s an emotional rendition of the Negro spiritual, punctuated by powerful images in this video. Try not to cry….
