The 2024 Best In Black Awards are in the books — and what a night!

Held at the Central Station Hotel, the ceremony shone a spotlight on the accomplishments and contributions of individuals and businesses that continue to elevate the city’s cultural and economic landscape.

Hosted by the dynamic Pepper Baker of ABC24, the evening was filled with heartfelt speeches, networking, and celebrations of Black excellence.

Attendees were treated to a showcase of talent and impact, applauding winners from diverse fields including hospitality, health and wellness, entertainment, and entrepreneurship.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young was recognized as this year’s Hometown Hero, receiving resounding applause for his ongoing dedication to the community and his leadership in Memphis.

The event also featured the prestigious Chairman’s Awards, which celebrated distinguished individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Memphis’ growth and success. Among the recipients were:

      • David McKinney – Corporate Executive of the Year, honored for his leadership as Vice President of Human Resources at AutoZone.n
      • Ruby Bright – Tri-State Defender Legacy Award, recognized for her more than 22 years of service and leadership as the former President and CEO of the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis.
      • James Alexander – Founding member of the Bar-Kays, honored for his influential role in shaping Memphis’ music legacy.

      • Best Food Event: Vintage901 Wine, Food and Music Festival
      • Best Event Planning Service: Best Right Events
      • Best in Hospitality and Tourism: Kermit Madison
      • Best Female Solo Artist: Carla Tolbert Taylor
      • Best Male Solo Artist: Courtney Little
      • Best Band: Michael Townsend
      • Best Local Radio Personality: Stan Bell – The Bell Ringer
      • Best Event or Radio DJ: DJ Babo (BAY-BOW)
      • Best Podcast: The Smoke Podcast
      • Best Social Media Influencer: Ladia Yates
      • Best Lounge/Club: ESCO Memphis
      • Best Bookstore: DeMoir Books & Things
      • Best Diversity and Inclusion Initiative: Memphis Heritage Trail
      • Best Educational Initiative: Porter Leath
      • Best Youth and Mentorship Program: L.Y.E. Academy
      • Best Start-Up Business: SNKRR Bar
      • Best Entrepreneur: Alandas Dobbins
      • Best Financial Institution: Trustmark
      • Best Beauty Salon: A Natural Affair
      • Best Health and Wellness Service: Refreshed Skin Studio
      • Best Clothing Boutique: Dean of Fashion Boutique
      • Best Art & Culture Initiative: Tom Lee Park – Sunset Skate Park

The night celebrated not only individual achievements but also the collective strength and resilience of Memphis’ Black community. The Tri-State Defender’s commitment to uplifting and acknowledging Black voices and businesses continues to drive positive change and growth in the Mid-South.
