The expectations for Whitehaven’s football team remain high, despite missing the postseason the last two years. Competing in one of Tennessee’s toughest districts, the Tigers are right where they need to be with two games left in the season.

Following a narrow 24-20 loss to Germantown, Whitehaven bounced back with a dominant 50-0 win over Craigmont. Now, the Tigers prepare for a critical matchup against the undefeated Collierville Dragons on Friday, October 25.

In the victory over Craigmont, Whitehaven’s defense was nearly flawless, not allowing the Chiefs a first down until the final minute of the first half. Demerius Brown and Christopher Hood each returned interceptions for touchdowns, while junior running back Christopher Tally ran for over 100 yards and added both a rushing and receiving touchdown.

Junior quarterback Jaden Thomas contributed with two rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns. He nearly added a 90-yard score, but the play was called back due to a sideline interference penalty when a referee collided with someone trailing the play.

Whitehaven’s defense, the heart and soul of the team, celebrated the shutout in style. The 50-point margin earned the team a 50-piece wing order, while the shutout meant doughnuts for all.

Head coach Rodney Saulsberry, pleased with the performance, said, “I just wanted the guys to come out and play a clean game and efficient. We just need to clean up the penalties. Great job by the young guys.”

With just two games left—against Collierville and Bartlett—Whitehaven needs only one more win to secure a playoff spot. The Tigers’ defense has kept them competitive all season, and with Tally’s explosive play, Whitehaven remains a threat on both sides of the ball.

Saulsberry is confident in the team’s position heading into the season’s final stretch. “I feel good because we control our own destiny. We have a big game next week against Collierville. We have to hone in and prepare for a great football game,” he said.

Reflecting on the team’s growth, Saulsberry added, “It feels so much better. These guys were so young, and now they are maturing and learning how to win. It takes time and pride in learning how to win and learning how to have success. You must earn your respect. That is what we are doing.”

Next up for Whitehaven is a crucial test against the top-ranked Dragons, who are No. 1 in Shelby County and No. 4 in Tennessee. Whitehaven is currently ranked ninth in the state, according to the latest Associated Press poll.
