March 1 is the deadline for applicants seeking a BlueCross Blue Shield of Tennessee Health Foundation Diversity Scholarship for 2017.
To understand the import of the scholarships, flip the calendar back to 2012 and then dial in on this thought: The health care industry is changing.
That change has brought increased access to insurance for many people not covered previously. And, according to BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, that change also reflects a “greater need for a qualified, diverse workforce to deliver that care.”
So five years ago, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee established a scholarship to address the “need for more inclusion in the health care setting.”
The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Community Trust, in collaboration with the Memphis Chapter of the National Association of Health Services Executives, offers a $10,000 college scholarship – awarded in two payments of $5,000 each over the course of two consecutive semesters – to three Tennessee minority students who wish to pursue careers in the field of health care.
Learn more about the scholarships and submit an application online. Applications can also be downloaded and mailed.
“These scholarships help outstanding minority students to achieve continued academic success,” said Ron Harris, vice president of Workforce Diversity for BlueCross.
“And in addition to that, this program serves to increase diversity in the health care field.”
