The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is inviting Memphis residents to participate in a virtual town hall meeting to discuss the findings of its recent investigation into the Memphis Police Department (MPD). The event will take place tonight, December 9, at 6:30 p.m. CT.
This virtual meeting is part of the DOJ’s effort to engage directly with Memphis residents about the scathing report that detailed patterns of excessive force, racial discrimination, and other systemic issues within MPD. The session will allow community members to share their experiences and provide input on potential reforms.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke emphasized the importance of community input during the reform process.
“The people of Memphis deserve to feel safe—in their homes, their neighborhoods, their cars—especially when they encounter police officers,” Clarke said. “We are committed to hearing from this community and working together to build a safer, fairer city.”
This meeting comes as both the DOJ and city leaders prepare for the next steps in addressing the findings of the investigation, which have sparked widespread calls for change.
The DOJ’s report revealed patterns of excessive force, racial discrimination, and unconstitutional practices by MPD. Federal officials are urging reforms through a consent decree, a court-enforced agreement to ensure compliance.
Mayor Paul Young, while resisting the consent decree, acknowledged the need for change. He announced the city will host its own series of town hall meetings to gather local input and create a community-driven improvement plan for MPD.
“We believe that by working with all of you and our community, we can faster and more effectively work towards the outcomes that we all desire,” Young said.
