BIZ PROFILE: Sugar’s Hair Gallery and Spa

by Paula Anderson, Special to The New Tri-State Defender

Antonia Gambrell, a licensed cosmetologist, has been styling and encouraging women to feel good about themselves through hair care design for over 20 years.  Whether your hair is relaxed or natural, she can create a style just for you.

You can find Gambrell in Collierville at Sugar’s Hair Gallery and Spa, which she opened in Dec. 2016 as a place to relax, unwind and be pampered.

“Toni has kept up with the latest trends while still maintaining the basics,” Cortney Jones, a long-time client, said. “I have changed my hair styles throughout the years from letting it grow out long to cutting it all off. …She always cares about how I feel and makes sure that I’m happy….

“I never have to wait, which is very important to me,” Jones said. “She keeps her appointment schedule. She actually cares about her clients, not only the way they look but also the way they feel.”

Gambrell received her training at Pizazz Hair Academy. She opened her first salon – Antonia’s Full Glamour Salon – in 1997 – and has continued to build her brand and reputation as a creative hair stylist.

“I love the profession because I get a chance to be creative with the versatility of the beauty industry, and I love communicating and building relationships with my clients as well,” said Gambrell, who notes the support she gets from her husband, Shaun Gambrell.

Before venturing into entrepreneurship, Gambrell worked for five years in another salon, learning the ropes about the business. She served the Winchester and Hill Hickory area for 16 years until she decided to take a “leap of faith.”

Sugar’s is located at 432 US-72 near I-385 and Poplar Ave. Expect personalized services in a private setting. You can unwind, relax, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the Sugar Rush Table with pastries, juice, coffee and cappuccino.

“I chose an area that has a need for an upscale hair salon and spa,” Gambrell said.

Full-service packages are offered for women and men. The service selections include hair care (relaxed and natural), manicures, pedicures, waxing, therapeutic massages and a heated sauna.

Sugar’s also offers pamper parties with a soothing atmosphere for groups of 10.

Women get the opportunity to eat fruit and cheese while relaxing in a soothing atmosphere.

“Over the years Antonia took very care of my hair and to help it grow and to be healthy,” Sharon Jones, another long-time client, said. “I have been a client of Antonia for 20-plus years. I trust her with my hair care and you don’t find many good beauticians that really care about you.”

Community service is another component of the salon. Sugar’s Sweet Surprise was held back in August. The salon gifted Elnora Blackledge’s family with school supplies and pampering services.

“I had cancer and I have five children and three out of five of my children are patients at St. Jude,” Blackledge said. “Because we are a local family we don’t get the allotted housing or the allotted funds or Visa card (or) Kroger cards. …They (Sugar’s) took the time out to make sure that my children were ready for school (with) school supplies, their hair was done, nails and toenails were painted.”

Calling the experience “out of sight,” Blackledge said, “(It) really, really, really benefitted my family.”
