Memphis and state leaders will have multiple opportunities in the coming days to honor the life and legacy of longtime state Rep. G.A. Hardaway, as his family has announced homegoing arrangements following his recent passing.
Hardaway died at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville after a short illness. He was 71.
Hardaway, who represented District 93 in the Tennessee House of Representatives for 19 years, will lie in state at the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville on Thursday, April 30, 12-4 p.m. — a distinction reserved for public servants whose contributions have left a lasting mark on the state.
The public observance will allow colleagues, constituents and residents from across Tennessee to pay their respects to a lawmaker widely remembered as both a forceful advocate and a deeply accessible presence in his community.
On Friday, May 1, 2026, a public viewing will be held in Memphis from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by the celebration of life service at 12 p.m. at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church,70 N. Bellevue Blvd.
Immediately following the service, burial will take place at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis.
Hardaway’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from elected officials, clergy, community leaders and residents, many of whom have described him as a “people’s representative” whose work was rooted in service and connection.
In addition to his legislative leadership — including serving as chair of the Shelby County Legislative Democratic Caucus and a former chair of the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators — Hardaway remained actively engaged in issues affecting Memphis up until his death, including legal efforts tied to the deployment of the Tennessee National Guard in the city and continued advocacy around criminal justice and community investment.
For many across Memphis — particularly in neighborhoods like Orange Mound, which Hardaway represented for nearly two decades — the services will mark not just a time of mourning, but a moment to reflect on a legacy defined by presence, persistence and a deep commitment to the people he served.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by E.H. Ford Mortuary, where cards, flowers and acknowledgments may be sent.
