Sony has announced a new Marvel movie calledĀ Silver & Black, based on the Spiderman characters Silver Sable and Black Cat.
With this announcement is also history in the making, as Gina Prince-Bythewood has been announced as the director for the movie, which is slated to come out in 2018, making her the first woman of color to direct a superhero movie.
This isnāt Prince-Bythewoodās first foray into the world of superheroes or even the world of Marvel heroes, either. She directed the pilot forĀ Marvelās upcoming seriesĀ Cloak & Dagger.
Prince-Bythewood will be rewritingĀ Thor: The Dark World writer Christopher Yostās script for the movie, which will come out after SonyāsĀ VenomĀ movie starring Tom Hardy.
While the announcement is exciting for superhero fans and for the future of women and women of color in directing this kind of project, weāll have to hold our breath that it stays true. After all, Ava DuVernay was supposedly in talks to direct MarvelāsĀ Black PantherĀ movie before turning it down over creative differences.
Ryan Coogler is now set to direct the film. With Coogler on Black Panther andĀ Patty Jenkins directingĀ Wonder Woman, thatās it for diversity in superhero directors, so weāre really hoping Sony sticks with it forĀ Silver & Black.
