Habari Gani!
The Tri-State Defender is celebrating Kwanzaa with our readers! We’re right here with you through Jan. 1, celebrating and focusing on the principles of the Nguzo Saba during this season of cultural revival!
Over the seven days of Kwanzaa, we’re exploring the Nguzo Saba—the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Each day brings a focus on a principle: what it means, why it matters, and how we can meditate on its wisdom.
We’ll also share a list of Kwanzaa events happening in Memphis, in case you’re ready to celebrate with others. If you’re unable to attend, take time to reflect on these principles and discuss them with others in your life. These values have the power to unite and heal our communities.
Celebrating Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
Yesterday, we lit the black candle in the center of the kinara for Umoja (Unity), reflecting on the strength of standing together as a community. Today, we light the first red candle on the left side of the kinara, representing Kujichagulia (Self-Determination).
Kujichagulia reminds us to define ourselves, name ourselves, and create a life that reflects our identity and values. It’s a call to take ownership of our narratives and live with authenticity and purpose.
Dr. Maulana Karenga described Kujichagulia as the foundation of self-empowerment:
“Self-determination demands that we see ourselves not through the eyes of others, but as we define ourselves.”
Reflections
As we light the first red candle, let’s consider how we define who we are. Are we shaping our lives according to our own vision, or are we living by someone else’s script? Today, take time to journal, meditate, or share with others what self-determination means to you. Embrace your power to build the life you choose.
Ancestor’s Quotes of the Day
- “If you don’t know who you are, anyone can name you.” — Carter G. Woodson
- “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” — Alice Walker
