#ACCESS901: Memphis shows up – and out – at NAACP Image Awards watch party

#ACCESS901 columnist Joy Doss

TV One and Xfinity hosted a watch party for the 49th Annual NAACP Image Awards at the National Civil Rights Museum and… It. Was. Grand.

I worked on the event with One35 Street agency, but by all accounts, aside from my own, it was a wonderful affair. It was an invite-only event that was completely laid out.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day broadcast followed the VIP reception, which featured the red carpet as well as open bar and hors d’oeuvres provided by Melissa’s Fine Catering. DJ Tootz provided the sound experience during the reception and kept the party going during commercial breaks and well after the event was supposed to wrap. We had to shut the music down to get them to go home. Now that’s a party, baby!

More importantly, we came together to celebrate #blackexcellence – at the Pasadena Convention Center and at our venue. Everyone was just as excited about the awards as they were the festivities. We watched intently, cheering for our favorites and, of course, admiring the glammed up and glowed up celebrities and their ensembles.

And Memphis, we were just about as fabulous on the red carpet in our cocktail attire as they were in Pasadena. Not even kidding. You guys showed up, in freezing weather no less, and showed out. Everyone looked maaahvelous dahling.

The event was part of the ongoing #MLK50 celebration. Earlier, a much-deserved salute was given to surviving workers from the 1968 sanitation workers strike that brought Dr. King to Memphis, where he was killed on the evening of April 4, 1968. We cannot say enough about the sacrifices they made and the changes they inspired.

Our photographers were on hand to capture the #mood, moments, magic, movers and shakers. Check it out.
