Tennessee Black Caucus disappointed in commission's vote

By TSD Newsroom

NASHVILLE –The Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators has issued the following statement from Chairperson Raumesh Akbari (D-Memphis) in response to the vote taken by the State Capitol Commission against relocating the bust of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest:

“The bust belongs in the State Museum. We are here to learn from history, not be reminded of its influence on the continuation of hatred, racism and bigotry. Its very presence in our State Capitol denotes an acceptance and pride that most of us do not share of the worst era in our nation’s history.

“Our Caucus shares the sentiments of our Governor and U.S. Senators who have all called for the bust’s removal from the Statehouse. In meetings this fall, the Caucus plans to finalize its 2018 agenda, including formulating legislation addressing the issue of relocating Confederate monuments.”
