Habari Gani!
We’re celebrating Kwanzaa with you! At The Tri-State Defender, we’re proud to join our readers in reflecting on the principles of the Nguzo Saba throughout this season of cultural connection and renewal.
Each day of Kwanzaa shines a spotlight on one of these guiding principles—helping us explore what they mean, why they matter, and how we can bring them to life in our daily actions.
Yesterday, we lit the first red candle for Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), honoring the power of defining ourselves. Today, we light the first green candle on the right side of the kinara, symbolizing Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) and the importance of building and sustaining our community together.
If you’re in Memphis, we’ll also highlight local Kwanzaa events to help you connect and celebrate. Whether you attend or reflect quietly at home, take time to think about how these principles can inspire healing and unity in your life and in our city.
Celebrating Ujima
Ujima reminds us that progress is best achieved when we work together. It calls us to recognize our interconnectedness and share responsibility for the well-being of those around us.
Dr. Maulana Karenga described Ujima as essential to collective progress:
“We must build and maintain our community together and make our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems, and solve them together.”
Reflections
As we light the first green candle, take a moment to reflect on how you’re contributing to the strength of your community. Ujima encourages us to lean into collective efforts—whether by volunteering, collaborating on a shared project, or simply offering support to someone in need.
Today, consider what role you play in fostering a thriving community. Every small action helps build the foundation for a brighter future.
