Bank of America names Hattiloo Theatre its 2021 Neighborhood Champion

Hattiloo Theatre is the recipient of the 2021 Bank of America Neighborhood Champion award.

Bank of America recognized Hattiloo as a high-performing nonprofit that is contributing to our community’s growth and vitality.

As part of the award, Hattiloo will join a cohort of other Neighborhood Champions from across the country that will engage in leadership/strategy sessions and receive $50,000 in flexible funding.

At a rehearsal on Wednesday, Bank of America Memphis Market President Trevia Chatman and other market leaders presented a $50,000 check to Hattiloo Founder Ekundayo Bandele.

“In a city with a 26 percent poverty rate, many Memphians believe they don’t have a voice they can add to the city’s narrative,” Bandele said.

“The truth is, many Black plays focus on the victimization of Black life. At Hattiloo, we appreciate and understand the power of unapologetic Black storytelling.

“And Bank of America’s support helps Hattiloo amplify the stories of marginalized citizens and provide audiences a contextual understanding of the complexity and diversity of Black life.”
