On Tuesday White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders aka Suckabee, was doing her usual awe shucks, golly gee bullshit that eventually lead into an assault on the media and what this administration pushes as fake news. Keep in mind that it was the first time in weeks that the White House allowed for the press briefing to be televised. Iโm not sure when the press became such wimps, but one reporter Brian Karem, a correspondent for Playboy, had enough.
Suckabee was pushing the resignation of three CNN employees for their work on a Russia/Trump investigative piece as fake news. CNN stated that the story didnโt meet their journalistic standards, but there has been no proof that the story was false. Didnโt matter because Karem had heard enough, he interrupted Suckabee to accuse her of inflammatory remarks in a room full of media. Watch the heated exchange below:
In that moment, Karem stood up not only for CNN, but for all of the journalists who have been dying for someone to push back against this fake news narrative that the White House has been pushing whenever stories are written that President Vladimir Trumpelstilskin doesnโt approve of.
On Wednesday, Karem MSNBCโs Morning Joe co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that this confrontation was a long time coming.
โWe are bullied and browbeaten every day, and I pretty much have had enough of it,โ Karem said. โThereโs really only two ways to deal with a bully โ turn them into your friend, (but) I donโt think thatโs a possibility, or let them know exactly whatโs up, and youโre not going to take the bullying anymore. We canโt take the bullying anymore. Itโs undermining the Fourth Estate, itโs undermining the First Amendment.โ
Karem added that the presidentโs relentless pursuit of the fake news narrative was at its core an assault on democracy.
โThe reporters I know in that room โ even Breitbart, those people are responsible โ for the government to sit there and undermine, essentially, what is an essential checks and balances in the system, itโs bit disheartening,โ Karem said. โItโs unnerving. I canโt take it anymore, itโs nuts,โ Raw Story reports.
Karem is right. Since Russia handed Trumpelstilskinโsthe election, the president has bullied the media, and his tactics have proven to be effective. When it was announced that press briefings wouldnโt be televised, the media did not protest this decision, instead they complied with the White Houseโs request and bitched about it on social media.
โWhat it speaks to is dissolving the independent media, and thatโs what โ itโs trying to co-opt the media, make us, if we donโt print what they want or broadcast what they like, weโre automatically fake media,โ Karem said, Raw Story reports.
Karem added that the fake news narrative is arguably one of the only strategies that the White House has, and its been consistent.
โItโs one of the few strategies iโve seen from this White House, and it has been ongoing,โ Karem said. โLook, I donโt lump everybody in with that. Theyโve done some things that are incredibly open โ adding Skype to their press briefings, bringing in members of the Cabinet for briefings โ but at the same time when the president of the United States, even (Wednesday) morning, is tweeting out โfake media,โ and telling us weโre the enemy of the people. Heโs enflaming the very people who got him in office. Heโs speaking to his base, and heโs trying to undermine the very essence of what we do, and thatโs not good for this republic, itโs not good for this country. Itโs anathema, itโs got to be stopped and we have to stand up to it.โ
