UN worker arrested for robbing banks during lunch break

On Monday, a United Nations employee was arrested for robbing four Manhattan banks. All of the robberies had apparently been committed while he was on his lunch break from his job at the UN.

Abdullahi Shuaibu, a Nigerian native, works at the UN headquarters as a journalist for an African news agency. He was arrested after a retired police officer who works at the building recognized Shuaibu from surveillance pictures that the NYPD had previously released. He was charged with two counts of robbery and two counts of attempted robbery.

The first incident happened at a Santander Bank on Madison Ave as Shuaibu walked up to a bank employee and said that he had a gun. The bank employee then handed Shuaibu an undisclosed amount of money. The second incident was at a Bank of America on Third Ave, though he was unsuccessful there. He was successful again robbing a Santander Bank on Third Ave. on the 27th, and most recently, he tried to rob an HSBC on Third Ave. when he passed the teller a note demanding cash.

The teller did not read the note but asked for identification, at which point Shuaibu allegedly told the employee to read the note while he kept his hand in his jacket and simulated a gun.
